Delivering to a computer in the office
Sorted Connector is a small program for a PC, Mac or office server that receives post and scans into local folders. It only ever connects outwards, so there's nothing to open on your firewall and no VPN.
1Add the computer in SortedPost
Open Destinations › On-site computers › Add computer. Name it, and say whose it is: link it to a person to deliver their own post to their own machine, or leave it as shared for an office server. Then Create pairing code. The code works once and expires in 30 minutes, so do the next step straight away.
2Install Sorted Connector on that computer
The download links are on the same page: a .pkg for Mac, and a .exe for Windows that installs for the current user without admin rights. It opens straight away and asks for the pairing code, then for the folder files should go into. Pick or create one, such as Scans in Documents, or a shared folder on the server.
Both ends then show the same fingerprint. If it matches, the computer is paired. From now on it runs in the background, with an icon in the menu bar or system tray.
For a Windows server where nobody is logged in, install from an administrator prompt instead: pair with the code, add the folders it may write to with sorted-connector folder add Post "D:\Scans\Post", then sorted-connector install to run it as a service. The app shows the exact commands with your code filled in.
A SortedScan workflow can file a matching .json/.xml metadata file, or an editable .docx, next to each document. These arrive in the same signed delivery as the document and take its final name, so Invoice (1).pdf gets Invoice (1).json. They need Sorted Connector 0.5.0 or later; older versions get the document only, and the app offers the update from the menu-bar or tray icon.
3Make it a destination
Back in SortedPost, add a Destination with the channel On-site computer, choose the computer and the folder, and optionally a sub-folder, a sub-folder per recipient and year sub-folders. Press Send a test file on the computer's entry and check it lands.
A SortedScan workflow can file to the same destination, with its own path template under that folder.
Several computers
Each install is its own computer in the list. Link each to a person and pick Each recipient's own computer on the destination, and everyone's post arrives on their own desk. An office server can be a shared one alongside.
Good to know
- Nothing comes in. The connector asks our server for work over HTTPS and writes the answer into its folder. Your network has no open port and your IT needs no rule.
- Only its folders. It can write into the folders added on that computer, and nothing else. It never overwrites an existing file; a second copy becomes Letter (1).pdf.
- Encrypted to the machine. Files are encrypted for that specific computer before they leave us, and our copy is deleted as soon as the computer confirms the file is written.
- Updates. When a newer version is available, the connector offers it; nothing installs unless someone on that computer clicks Install. An admin can turn the offer off per computer.
- Removing a computer in SortedPost stops deliveries to it at once, and un-pairs it. Uninstalling on the computer does the same from that end.
